On March 5 NUKU theatre premiers Vahur Keller’s nerv-racking thriller Birds, which was influenced by Alfred Hitchcock’s most famous film as well as Daphne du Maurier’s short story.
The apocalyptic bird attacking element is the ground of the story, which is tied together with two love stories. Two young artists - deaf girl Sissi and her photographer boyfriend Frank - move into a secluded house by the sea to get away from others. Unfortunately, overly friendly Saul and Netti have joined the neighbourhood for a Summer holiday. Thus, hidden thoughts and secrets begin to emerge.
Producer Vahur Keller is mostly intrigued by the attacking birds’ connection to the personal psyche’s irrational secrecy. “Although seemingly rational, our motives for action are often as enigmatical as the surrounding patterns of nature. It has been an exciting theme to delve into” says Keller.
Birds is a continuation to NUKU’s past production The Portrait of Dorian Gray. Both the production team and acting troupe are more or less the same. Production space and atmosphere is created by artist Britt Urbla Keller, lighting designer Madis Kirkmann and video designer Kristin Pärn, and the important role of sounds is provided by Liina Sumera.
Performances take place in NUKU’s smaller auditorium, which has a non-traditional appearance. The space will fit just over 100 audience members as the stage area has been expanded. A demanding stage design and the desire to engage the audience have created a unique stage construction.
Actors: Kaisa Selde, Mart Müürisepp, Lee Trei ja Andres Roosileht.
The performance is for adults or young viewers aged 16 and over.
Birds premiers on March 5 at 6pm. Other performances In March, April and May.
