Ever since we were children, we were told that silence gives consent. Sometimes it does. But usually, it does not. We are silent, because we are afraid to speak. It is safer this way; it is how we survive. When speaking about a relationship between two people, it is not a question of if they said no but instead, if they clearly said yes. Was the person even in a position to be able to refuse?
Consent is based on the French author Vanessa Springora’s autobiographic novel describing a 14-year-old girl’s relationship with a male writer 30 years her senior. Even though she believed at the time that it was true love, the kind we experience only once in a lifetime – what was it in reality? What is consent in an unequal relationship? What marks does it leave? When all the bystanders knew, why did nobody say anything? And what happens when the protagonist of the story decides to break her silence?
